Chow Vendor from Chamba

ACHIEVER SERIES - I

Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma is another reality show with crass display of emotions and stage managed theatrics. But one contestants story was inspirational enough to give me enough goose pimples to tickle my tear buds. Interestingly my ACHIEVER SERIES starts with Rajeev, someone whom I have not seen in flesh and blood.

Rajeev is a lad from sleepy Chamba. He wants to make it big as a singer. So he entered Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma contest. Before this he had tried his luck but lost out.

In Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma, none of the girls wanted to be paired along with him. Finally Rajeev was paired with a girl whose parents are settled in Egypt and in the opposite side of the money spectrum.

Rajeev happens to be the son of a music lecturer in H.P College, Chamba. The family of four just about survives. The roof of his house lets in water whenever the Gods in Chamba decides to pour.

For a living Rajeev runs a road side stall. He has a 6-7 yrs assistant who helps him out. That is his only source of livelihood. One look at the mapped distempered walls, the lone "lohen ka kadai" and a ram shackle stove will give a hint of his life in Chamba. During 6-8 months of the competition when he was staying in Mumbai his shop has remained closed. He said a lot was at stake for him.

Thus when he was booted out in the semi-finals I could'nt help feeling for him. He sang a departing song which showed he is a natural but scarily untrained. Its a voice that will make an established singer edgy.

Recently I came to know that some classical singer has taken him under his tutelage. It made me feel good.

But mind you! This is not about the reality show, its not about judging whether its all fake. I will take everything on face value. And I will salute the audacity of his dream. A dream beyond my capacity. And thats enough for me to feature him on my blog.

I am ready. Expect some on similar lines. But whats wrong with this guy's story. You should have seen his shop (if what was shown was true).

By the way. In one of the recent interviews someone cynically said "Oh! You have a blog" and he then commented "Who reads it?". I felt slighted and said "I".

haha..that was a good one..
ok..here's to your achiever.
being in bombay i have seen thousands of these specimens who chuck everything away to pursue the bollywood dream. they dont have talent, they dont have skills.. just these stars in their eyes that draw them there and make them waste their lives. What right does he have to leave his family without any form of sustenance to pursue some wild dream? And even if he does have that right (its his life anyway) why do we sing praises to such a character? i mean it would have been something if he had achieved something..there are zillions of such success stories..but a semi finalist (not even a winner) in indian idol (a show that has nothing to do with talent?)..come on koushik..u have to do better than that.

Hi kaushik,I m not sure i'll term him as an achiever yet,but surely he is a dreamer, and he dares to pursue it to its ultimate;that needs raw guts.He didnt seem very promising in the beginning, but he had worked real hard to shine-up & he sings from his heart,he might go a long way,if not distracted. And dear shuv,a semi-finalist from nowhere is worth more than a finalist having years of experience;he might leave all of them far behind in a couple of years,if he follows his dream passionately;you never know.

shuv,
why should he stop dreaming? it's one life man. don't be too practical. what life he would get staying in chamba, making tea for others. at least he tried. give him some encouragement man, just as kaushik did.
kudos to you kaushik.

Guys! we all surely like to see people around Kaushik to be in such list rather than world at large. They are exposed to media and press and so they have already be taken care of. Many such Kaushiks are already writing about them, but the people who not known to others but only to my dear friend will be our subject of interest. They only need this Kaushik to take charge and in his own small way give them some kind of recog. which nobody has given till date.

Am I wrong??

Anon: How can u be wrong? If u ask me I think u r absolutely right..

Rip: U r right he cannot by any means be called an achiever in the true sense. However this guy does have the spirit. And that is what I admire about him.

Suv: I can understand your cynicism from your personal experience in Mumbai. You wud rather term these guys as a fool rather than an achiever. So can I call him a romantic fool atleast?
